The Mountain Sanctuary — Sewanee, Tennessee

A Gentle Space for Children to Wander, Wonder, and Know They Are Loved

I am delighted to welcome your family to Peace and Quiet's new home atop the Cumberland Plateau. Surrounded by endless miles of hiking, waterfalls, and morning mist, Sewanee offers a rare refuge from the hurried world. Here, Peace and Quiet opens its doors as a dedicated space where children, parents, and educators gather to practice presence, gratitude, and the art of compassionate listening.

Spiritual Direction for Adults

I am delighted to share that I am currently in the practicum phase of my adult spiritual direction master's degree program. I am currently offering free spiritual direction sessions for adults this semester. I invite you to join me in person or on Zoom where we can explore your spiritual journey together with both playfulness and depth.

Chapter II • Foundations of Compassion

Peace Begins with Parents

Children absorb our internal weather long before they understand our words. When we regulate our own breath and form our own mindfulness practices, we begin parenting deliberately with calm and compassion. Fostering a peaceful household begins with the humble practice of pausing before reacting, listening with open attention, and offering ourselves the grace we wish to impart.

Chapter III • OutoftheBox

OutoftheBox at Wild Goose

One of my favorite ways to connect with children is through a contemplative storytelling method called OutoftheBox.

We spent last weekend at Wild Goose Festival, sharing this method with our peers in the progressive Christian and Social Justice space.

Claire Helton and I will be leading a training in Nashville some time in the spring. Please reach out if you might be interested!

Mindfulness Practice for Children

The Mountain Breath Exercise

A simple, bodily practice designed to help children find stability whenever feelings become overwhelming:

1. Mountain Pose: Plant your feet firmly on the Earth, grounding your body with the stability of an ancient mountain. 2. The Inhale: Breathe in gently through the nose as arms rise overhead like a tall peak. 3. The Exhale: Slowly release the breath through the mouth while lowering hands to the heart, resting steady like stone.

Repeat three times together before morning departures or evening sleep.

Join Our Circle in Sewanee

We welcome families of all backgrounds to experience family mindfulness and meditation on the mountain.
